"EMILY OF NEW MOON"
Fourth Episode: "The Disappointed House"
Leni's Role: May Brownell
Emily and Perry decide to explore an old abandonded house for a while before she goes to class. He admits to her that he cannot read or write, and would like to attend school. They make fun of May Brownell and call her an 'Old Battle Ax' and an 'Old Hag' but admit that an education is important, even though Miss Brownell is the teacher.
The class starts for the day and May discovers that Emily is not listening to the lesson, so she very rudely takes Emily's slate and begins to read the poem that Emily was composing thereon. Believing that the poem will probably be trash, May reads it out loud thinking that her actions will humiliate the child and make her a laughing stock in front of the class. But, she is mistaken - - The poem is beautiful. May has made a fool out of herself, as the class likes the poem. So to get even, she points out the spelling mistakes that Emily had made.
Seeing that Miss Brownell wants to continue to make sport of Emily, Rhoda tattles on her and blurts out to May that Emily has more poems hidden away in her desk. May runs over to the desk, rips open the top, and takes out the poems. She proceeds to read again out loud and accuses Emily of plagiarism while she tears the poems to pieces. Now Miss Brownell is really upset!!!! So she picks on another student to hurt. Emily screams out that what is happening is wrong, and runs out of the school house crying.
May has received her reward for the day, she has completely demoralized two children to teach the class discipline!!!!
After school is over, Miss Brownell visits Aunt Elizabeth to report Emily for being disrespectful in class. The girl complains that Brownell provoked the outburst, but May lies about the incident and makes the child out as the culprit. Elizabeth completely agrees with May over Emily and the child is made to apologize for being rude and insolent to her teacher. May accepts the apology with a warning for the future, and then leaves for home without taking tea.
What has happened to May Brownell in her past, that has turned her into such a disagreeable and hateful person? Why does she lash out with such venom to deliberately hurt those that depend on her? Why does she hate and despise some of the children, and then find solace and contentment with tattletails and bullies??? Yes, May Brownell is an interesting lady!!!
